Common Mistakes Upcoming Artist(e)s Make

Being an artist(e) is unlike most professions, it is a profession that requires a lot of learning. A profession that leaves you a legacy long after you're gone. It takes a lot to break into the limelight in the world.
There are many pitfalls and obstacles on the road to success. It is not uncommon then to see young & rising talents trying to scale through many hurdles got a chance at glory & success.

If you want to become an artist(e), avoid these ten major mistakes and see yourself fulfil your potentials.

Not marching your art with your personality.

Most wannabes underestimate the importance of their self-image. Art business is the complete package: your artworks and your personality.

You should learn to reflect your personality through your art. That way you are not just producing commercial art pieces but you're expressing your thoughts in your works. That is art!

Trying to 'get your name out there' so soon.

Although this seems to be the major goal of every artist(e), but it should not let you lose focus of your fundamental development. Keep working on yourself and developing your talent until you're ready for the bigger stage. Learn first!

Believing that social media sites is the key to self promotion.

Social media sites can be a great tool but it is just a piece of the puzzle. Spending all day in front of the computer screen is not enough. Life is best lived outdoors.

As an artist(e) you should fall in love with your surroundings. Get to know people. Nothing promotes you better than the people around you recommending you. Leave the screens awhile!

Not investing enough time into building your career.

Most aspiring artist(e)s spend most of their time creating but put little efforts into other crucial elements needed to succeed in the art world. Talent alone is not enough.

What are you good at? Have you tried tried other genres outside your niche? Have you tried new things? Build yourself!

Not building the right A-team.

There comes a time when you need to surround yourself with like minds. Whenever you choose to build or join a team - do not go for negative, lazy people that lack ambition. Rather, go for people with focus, that have a lot to offer.
Like minds attract!

Having merely mediocre convincing skills.

You need to know that during the course of your career as an artist(e), you would come up against numerous critics. No matter how good your works may be, you'll still get criticised.

However, you should be able to defend your works at all times. To do that you need to have a good command of language. Keep working on that. Convince!

Focusing on increasing the 'quantity' of your fans instead of the 'intensity' of your fans.

As an artist(e) your fans are the people that appreciate your works. But while a lot of people would appreciate your art, only a few would be willing to part with their cash for it. The latter are your patrons.

You should treat them very well cause they are the ones that can recommend you to other potential buyers. Patrons before fans!

Not enough cash flow to support your art career.

Face it, you need money to pursue a career in the arts. Source for income from other means which you can pump into your art or you might end up packing your bags and giving up. Cash!

Not enough depth in your relationships.

There is an old saying that goes, "It's not only what you know, it's who you know". You don't want to simply know people and be known.

You want people who know you to have a real deep connection with you so that you are at the fore of their minds when opportunities presents itself. Try your best to relate with everyone in a friendly manner. Relationships!

Not getting an education.

While the title of being a self-taught artist(e) can be a nice tempting one, never pass down the opportunity to get a proper education.

Actually, getting an education does not guarantee success. You would just always have a certificate to show for your efforts. But do realise you miss much when you do not get an education.

It might not necessarily mean going to college but some courses wouldn't be a bad idea. And try to read a book every other day. Knowledge is power!
