Nigeria: A Land of Heritage
🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬
I happen to be a proud Nigerian by default & I gotta confess there is so much that makes this gigantic West African country amazing!
Nigeria: A Land of Heritage

This is gonna be lengthy one though cause there so much about my country that makes me a proud Nigerian, so do yourself some good and get yourself some popcorn & make yourself comfy.

PROFILE

Nigeria is a richly endowed country with abundant human and natural resources. Handpicked by God to be the brightest spark on the African continent.

A land without natural disasters but blessed with a variety of mineral deposits which includes petroleum its major export, natural gas, gold, limestone, tin, coal, iron ore, precious metals & gemstones.

LOCATION

Found between 4`N – 14`N of the Equator & 3`E – 15`E of the Greenwich Meridian. Nigeria sits in the West of Africa. It is bounded in the West by the Republic of Benin, in the north-east by the Lake Chad, in the north by Niger Republic, in the East by Cameroun & in the south by the Atlantic Ocean.

The two major rivers flowing through the country are the River Niger & River Benue. The river Niger flows through a large part of the country forming a confluence with the River Benue at Lokoja and emptying its content at the Niger Delta into the Atlantic Ocean. Nigeria has a total land area of approximately 923,768km2.

INDEPENDENCE

Nigeria became a politically independent state on the 1st of October 1960, becoming the most populous black nation after breaking ties with its colonial masters Britain.

We owe a lot to Britain as they are the reason why we are an entity after the amalgamation done by Lord Luggard, of Southern & northern Nigeria in 1914.

The name Nigeria was even coined by his wife, Mrs Flora Luggard after the great River Niger which is a major landmark feature in the country. Nigeria means 'Niger area'.

ETHNICITY

Populated by three major tribes which are the 'Igbos', the 'Yorubas' and the 'Hausas/Fulanis'. Nigeria is still culturally diverse with over a hundred more ethnic groups. We all live together in unity within the 36 states of the country.

I happen to be from the Igbo tribe whose home is in the South-Eastern part of the country. Our tribe is still very diverse with many sub-tribes and local dialects; this is the case with some other tribes within the country.

LANDSCAPE & WILDLIFE

You can find the best that nature has to offer with our amazing landscape; from the Sokoto plains to the Chad basin, to the Jos plateaus and the Adamawa mountains, right down to the south-western rocky lands of Abeokuta to the Niger Delta and the coastal cities of Lagos and Port Harcourt. Truly we have it all.

Catch a glimpse of wildlife at the Yankari Games Reserve, marvel at the Ikogosi warm spring, stare at a cattle herd at the Obudu cattle ranch, skydive off Zuma rock or just drive past the presidential villa at Aso Hill. Experience culture and nature at its best.

CLIMATE

The weather welcomes the foreigner with the sweat scents of a tropical region and fills the Nigerian contigents abroad with nostalgia.

LAGOS

The industrial city of Lagos is its most popular city and centre of commerce, a contrast to the capital city of Abuja which is more serene. Lagos is located along the western coastline; the Lagos lagoon divides it into the mainland and the island. It is called the centre of excellence because of its sophistication and elegance. It remains the pride of the country.

If you ever find yourself in Lagos be sure to check out the Elegushi & Bar beaches at lekki, the National Theatre in Surulere, The National Museum at Onikan, the exquisite estate of VGC and oh least I forget, do order for the delicious delicacy of Amala & Ewedu soup with something chilled to go with it. Then maybe you could head off to Quilox or Askamanya to party with the best & wildest of Lagos girls.

NATIONAL FLAG 🇳🇬

The national flag is a green, white & green emblem; a symbol of our rich agricultural practices and national heritage.

AGRICULTURE

Agriculture accounts for over 60% of the occupation of the Nigerian populace, especially those living in the rural settlements. Agricultural produce like groundnut & oil palm used to be our major export before the discovery of crude oil.

Local crops include: maize, rice, groundnut, plantain, millet, yam, cocoyam, cocoa, kola, cassava, oil palm, sugarcane, melon etc., as well as a variety of fruits & vegetables like spinach, banana, bitterleaf, watermelon, pineapple, cashew, pawpaw, waterleaf etc. The fertile lands in Nigeria can grow almost anything!

Not just that, the rearing of domestic animals is common practice across the nation. The Fulanis being normad rear cattles which produces the beef consumed in the country.

DIVERSITY & CULTURAL HERITAGE

Cultural diversity means somethings just comes with lots of fun things to learn & do. Ancient civilisations have come and gone such as the Benin Empire, Oyo Kingdom, Sultan Emirates and many more.

In its modern form it means festivals & practices passed down from generations to generations. A lot of these festivals take place across the country annually, which is also witnessed by people that come in from different places around the world.

HOME OF FESTIVALS

Whether you find yourself in a fishing boat trying to catch the largest fish at the Argungu fishing festival in Kebbi or you find yourself dancing with masquerades at the Eyo festival in Lagos or you are riding alongside a century-old dynasty emir at the Durban festival in Kano or you’re simply enjoying the delicacies at the New Yam festival in the east around August.

You can never go wrong when you return to hip dance with sexy ladies at the modern Calabar festival or you simply just want to enjoy tequila from the bar at Eko hotel during the Industry night in Lagos. Or you could simply stargaze at the craziest collections of constellations from your hotel room while fantasizing about the pretty ladies in Uyo – you know we got the prettiest of them all across the continent of Africa (you can google that).

Nigerians just know how to have fun, cause truly you don’t need to have it all to have a good time.
